What is an electronic invoice?

An electronic invoice is issued, sent and stored as structured data that software can read directly. A PDF sent by email is not one: it is an image of an invoice that the customer still has to re-type.

What Morocco plans

The key points of the framework set by the tax administration:

Timeline
Phased rollout under DGI regulatory decrees (large enterprises first, followed by SMEs)
Companies concerned
Companies subject to Corporate Tax (IS) and VAT in Morocco based on regulatory turnover thresholds
Format and platform
Structured electronic data (XML/EDI or compliant signed PDF) with secure transmission via SIMPL
Official source
Direction Générale des Impôts (DGI Morocco · dgi.gov.ma)

This guide only uses information published by the DGI. It is updated with each new official publication; the update date is at the top of the page.

Why prepare now

Less re-typing

Your invoices leave in the right format and customers import them without manual entry.

Fewer errors

Numbering, identifiers and VAT are checked by the software before issuing.

Faster payment

A compliant invoice received instantly gets paid sooner.

A calm transition

Clean data and good habits are built before the deadline, not the day before.

How to prepare in six steps

  1. Take stock. List your document types (quotes, invoices, credit notes), volumes and the tools that produce them.
  2. Clean up customer data. ICE, tax ID and addresses of your customers accurate and up to date in one file.
  3. Check your invoice details with your accountant. Confirm the required information on your invoices and your VAT rates.
  4. Choose your solution. Existing software, an add-on module or custom software, according to your criteria.
  5. Test on real invoices. Issue a few invoices in parallel with the new tool before switching.
  6. Train the team. The people who invoice must know the new process, especially credit notes.

Keep your software or change it?

If your management software exports its data cleanly or has an API, a bridge to the expected format is often enough. If it doesn't, or if you still invoice in Excel, dedicated invoicing software becomes the simplest solution. Selection criteria are on our e-invoicing software page.

Mistakes to avoid

Waiting until the last minute

Incomplete customer data is the main cause of delays, and cleaning it takes time.

Confusing a PDF with an e-invoice

Emailing a PDF does not meet a structured e-invoicing obligation.

Editing an issued invoice

A mistake is corrected with a credit note, never by changing the original invoice.

Choosing a closed tool

Software with no export or API will block you at the next format change.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a PDF invoice and an electronic invoice?

A PDF is an image of an invoice: the customer has to read and re-type it. An electronic invoice is a set of structured data in a defined format that the customer's or the administration's software can process automatically. A PDF can accompany an e-invoice but does not replace it.

Is e-invoicing mandatory for every company in Morocco?

The scope and timeline are set by the DGI, Morocco's tax administration: the phased rollout is defined by company size and DGI regulatory decrees. Check your situation with your accountant and the official source, then prepare your data and tools without waiting for the deadline. This guide is updated with every official publication.

Do we need to change our invoicing software?

Not necessarily. If your software exports its data or has an API, a bridge can produce the expected format. A change is mostly needed if you invoice in Excel or Word, or if your tool offers no usable data export, which would block you at every format update.

What can we do right now?

Clean up your customers' identifiers, check your invoice details and VAT rates with your accountant, and list the tools that produce your invoices. These three actions make the transition easier, whatever the final timeline and whichever solution you choose. Start this month.
